To the College Freshman

When I stepped on campus for the first time last year, I was feeling a bit anxious. I am going to assume you all probably are feeling the same as college freshmen. Feeling like a small fish in a big pond is normal, but big ponds mean big opportunities and many connections!

Tip: 1

Be comfortable with being alone? Although it's important to make friends, there will be more times than one when you feel like you're alone! BUT, I've learned that getting to know yourself is so important and taking time to evaluate your goals and think about your day is beneficial!

Tip 2:

Take a step! When it comes to meeting friends, you have to go for it! There most likely isn't going to be a introduction made for you, so talk to the person sitting to your right or left, ask them what they're interested in or if they want to get dinner. I promise, other people are waiting to be talked to - just like you.

Tip 3:

Don't be afraid to say no! I struggled so much with this my freshman year! I love being around people and doing fun things, but sometimes I would say yes out of obligation or fear of missing out. You have to make your goals, & your health a priority! I have to stay in some nights to get work done when I would rather be out having fun, but I promise your friends will still be there the next time when you're free!

Tip 4:

Your classes can not overcome you. You will feel SO overwhelmed. You're getting dates thrown at you and exams, homework, papers, BUT just like anything if you make time and work hard at it, you won't fail. Seek the clarity you need (even if it's asking a million questions). Put the time in that it takes to understand it. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Tip 5:

JOIN something! As much fun as it is to be a student and hang with friends, getting involved on campus has opened doors for me to new friendships and new opportunities! It will give you great experience of what's to come post graduation.
